Have you ever wished that a big YA book tour would make a stop in your hometown? Well, here’s your chance for that wish to come true! YA2U is a program that features five award-winning and best-selling authors who are holding a contest to see what city they should visit in an exclusive tour stop!

The authors are collecting votes from January 1 to February 15, and any city in the continental US or any Canadian city that has an international airport can win an exclusive visit from all five authors, including an author panel and book signing! Entering is super easy–and if you help spread the word about the contest, you can also enter win a signed copy of all of their books (TEN signed books in total!)–and the book contest is open internationally!

The authors in the program are:

And they want to have an event in your home town! To participate, just got to the YA2U website and let them know what city you want them to come to. And while you’re there, help spread the word about the contest and you can be entered to win all of their books–TEN signed books in total!

Here’s why the YA2U Team should come to MY hometown!

Why should the YA2U crew come to Avon, Connecticut? Let me count the ways…
  • Connecticut is home to the infamous Leatherman, and that’s just plain awesome.
  • Connecticut is also home to the oldest public library in the United States.
  • Noah Webster was born in West Hartford, Connecticut in 1758.
  • In Hartford, the state’s Capitol, it is illegal to cross the street while walking on your hands.
  • Mark Twain died in Redding, Connecticut and his home in Hartford Connecticut has been restored and turned into a pretty awesome museum.

These are all reasons why the YA2U crew should come to Connecticut in general so really, my final reason is in support of the town of Avon, Connecticut:

  • We have a newly expanded, renovated, and absolutely gorgeous library in Avon, and we are lucky enough to have a pretty phenomenal room dedicated specifically to our teen readers!
Why not join in the fun today and share with others about this program and your hometown. The more votes your town gets, the closer you are to having your very own personal tour stop! Vote for YOUR town here!
Even more exciting is that if you help spread the word, you can also participate in the book giveaway. Tell them that you learned about YA2U from me and we both get extra entries in the contest!

2012 in review

Though these stats aren’t anywhere near as high as some of my friends, they made me feel pretty fantastic. Not only was this my first year of blogging but I switched to WordPress from Blogger half way through the year so I am impressed with the showings of my hard work. Thank you to all of my readers, I really do appreciate every single comment and kind word from you. I love you, friends! 2013: Let’s do this!!

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 4,900 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 8 years to get that many views.

Looking Back: The Best of 2012

I know that I did the 2012 end of the year survey but I wanted to make this one a little more personal for my favorites of 2012!

Book that reminded me that I love to read: The Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom by Christopher Healy. Any of you who have read my review know how much I adored this book. I hugged it after I finished and I am anxiously awaiting book two.

heros

Favorite BAMF: Silas Dane. Guys I can’t get enough of this man. He is foreboding, a tad evil, yet extremely loyal and smart and he has a pet crow! I would LOVE a pet crow! YUMMY, for sure!

Favorite companion: I really had a soft spot for Fianchu from Heart’s Blood by Juliet Marillier and, as always, Fiacha from her Sevenwaters series and the main character in her novella Twixt Firelight and Water.

Favorite debut author: So many that I loved this year so I’m going to cheat and name a few but first, let me say that every single debut author listed here has been SO incredibly nice and reached out to myself and fellow bloggers to thank us for our reviews. If you are reading this, dear debut author, just know that I personally squeal very loudly and do a happy dance when you read and/or respond to a review or mention! So my favorites in no particular order are: Ruth Frances Long, Anna Banks, A.C. Gaughen, Marissa Burt, Rachel Hartman, and I think this might be cheating because I do believe he has written a children’s book before, Christopher Healy

BFF: Scarlet from Scarlet by A. C. Gaughen. I loved this book so much that I was petting its pages. Scarlet and I would totally be BFFs, she is hardcore but a softie on the inside (don’t tell anyone, YA HEAR?!)

Most swoonworthy lad: Duval from Grave Mercy, I think. He was just the right amounts of good and bad. All gentlemanly, yet MANLY at the same time…YAY!

Favorite setting: New Orleans, baby! A Beautiful Evil by Kelly Keaton. Despite not loving the book, it has an absolutely beautiful setting, it really made me want to travel there right this minute!

Favorite pick found while perusing: The Wintercraft series by Jenna Burtenshaw. This was a series I had heard nothing about and simply saw it on the shelf at my local library, read the back and immediately checked it out. There are so many things to love about this series. The world building is intricate yet not overwhelming, the plot is unique, the main guy is totes swoonworthy, yet there is no love triangle and very little hinting at any romantic interludes. Though part of me longs for them (I LOVE YOU SILAS!) a larger part is really impressed at Burtenshaw’s level of storytelling that doesn’t fall back on familiar tropes. Go add this to the TBR, friends, you won’t be disappointed!

wintercraft

Fantastical creatures: DRAGONS, FOR THE WIN!! I read so many books about dragons this year, friends! Top of my list for favorite dragon book has to be Seraphina by Rachel Hartman but I also thoroughly enjoyed Dragon Slippers by Jessica Day George and Dragonswood by Janet Lee Carey. Both of these titles reminded me of The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede which I absolutely adored while growing up.

That bad boy you shouldn’t love, but…: OH SOPHIE’S CHOICE! Disclaimer: The answer here, hands down, goes to WOLFIE from Scarlet but this book has yet to be published and I have yet to review it so by default I must choose another…I think I am going to go with Silas Dane here AGAIN. Yes he is a BAMF and he is a teeny bit, ya know, evil, but reader, I LOVE HIM!

Favorite male lead: I think Duncan, from The Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom takes this one. He makes my heart happy.

Favorite female lead: I would go with Scarlet Benoit from Scarlet by Marissa Meyer here but I am sticking to books already published SO I am going to say Anna from Anna Dressed in Blood and Girl of Nightmares by Kendare Blake. She is pretty awesome and though she is scarier in book one – until we get to know her, like most villains – she is still pretty amazing in book two!

anna

Best summary in two words: Assassin nuns.

Good thing I didn’t judge by it’s cover: Cinder by Marissa Meyer. I have NO idea why but this cover nearly turned me off to the book! I know that so many people love it and after reading the book I actually understand that, but if Heidi hadn’t ASSURED me that I would love this one I am ashamed to say that I might not have picked it up!

So glad I judged by it’s cover: Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson. I had it on my radar solely because the cover was absolutely gorgeous, then I read some reviews and I was hooked!

Hug the book moment: You’ll just kill me if I choose Hero’s Guide for yet another answer, right? So if I tell you that I physically hugged that book after finishing it you will be bored and just never return to the blog again? Okay, I won’t say it (even though it’s true). Instead, I will leave you with this part in Storybound“It became Una’s habit, on days that she felt especially invisible, to retire to the basement of the school library. Most students stayed on the main floor, grouped together at sunny tables, giggling over their math problems and English homework. But Una preferred the lower level, where she could sit undisturbed except for the odd student scurrying down to get some reference book needed for a research paper. She would tuck into her favorite desk underneath one of the high basement windows – half daydreaming, half reading – while the minutes flew by and she wondered what it would be like to live a different life.”

Worth the hype: Cinder by Marissa Meyer. I was wary to pick this one up but I devoured it, AND its sequel which I was lucky enough to own, and let me tell you, they both gave me the biggest book hangovers of 2012. Add them to the TBR if you haven’t already.

cinder

Newest addiction: All things Neil Gaiman. Especially his audiobooks, yessir!

Scariest villain: Oh my I think Rumplestiltskin from The Book of Lost Things takes the cake for this one, he was one scary guy.

Favorite laugh out loud moment: “Wild card, got it,” Duncan said. “Just like in Crazy Eights. I can be a diamond; I can be a spade. Whatever you need me to be, I’m that thing. That is so me.” – From The Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom by Christopher Healy

Best slow burn romance: Okay, yes, Juliet Marillier again provided us with a lovely slow burn romance between Flint and Neryn in Shadowfell, HOWEVER, I think that Duval and Ismae’s relationship from Grave Mercy got to me a bit more. There is a moment where she is laying in bed and he walks over and grabs her ankle…I literally made a girly “eep” noise out loud as I read it. Oh my.

Biggest ugly cry moment: The ending of Tiger Lily. That letter. Oh my, I can’t even…

Mermaid book worth taking the plunge over: Of Poseidon by Anna Banks. I think my review explains my feelings nicely.

Favorite new to me genre/book: Middle Grade books for SURE! This year I fell in LOVE with middle grade novels thanks to Dragon Slippers by Jessica Day George,  The Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom by Christopher Healy, The Wishing Spell by Chris Colfer, Liesl & Po by Lauren Oliver and Breadcrumbs by Anne Ursu. I can’t wait to devour SO MANY MG novels in 2013!

Thank you Netgalley!: Amber House by Kelly Moore was a book I randomly found while perusing Netgalley one day. I needed a book to pass the time while at a family party of the beau’s (lovely, I know) and I saw the cover and my interest was immediately caught. The book was beautifully written and creepy at all the right parts, I don’t think enough of you know about it so take my word and add it to the TBR!

amber house

Non-bookish THINGS that I loved in 2012:

Doctor Who: That’s right, people! I started watching it on Netflix and now I can. not. stop. I am nearly through season 1 and here are my thoughts..

  1. The Doctor is yummy.
  2. I do NOT like it when Rose and The Doctor share any sort of intimate moment. Keep your hand OFF of his cheek, woman!
  3. I would make a better companion than Rose.
  4. The question “Are you my mummy?” makes me want to cry in a corner for a bit.
  5. OH HAI CAPTAIN JACK!!

The Hobbit: Though I enjoyed The Lord of the Rings movies I do not remember loving them as much as The Hobbit. We went to see it on my birthday and I was literally clasping my hands in glee. I especially loved the part with Smigel, “If he guesses wrong….WE EATS HIM WHOOOLE!” Love.

Tin Man: I’m not going to get into too much detail here since I will be reviewing this for you all during Project: Fairy Tale, but just know that it is totally worth watching, Zooey Deschanel is amazing, the Tin Man is yummy and SyFy is sometimes really, really cool.

Book Expo America: It was an amazing experience. I was able to meet authors and bloggers who I really admire and my eyes were opened to many opportunities as a blogger as well as knew titles I had yet to hear anything about. I am really looking forward to what BEA 2013 has in store!

Looking Ahead: The Must Read Pile of 2013

As I was perusing my Goodreads to compile my list for this post I realized that there are WAY too many books that I want (need) to read! Therefore, let’s break this down by sections..I am going to let you all in on the new books I want to read, the sequels I want to read, the “older” titles I want to read, the less known titles to be read, and the books I’d like to re-read in 2013, and I am going to keep it to just five titles a section. FIVE. Wow. Okay, let’s go:

New titles of 2013

Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman (June 18) – A NEW NOVEL BY NEIL GAIMAN!! Also? HIS LAST BOOK TOUR! AHHH!!

Strands of Bronze and Gold by Jane Nickerson (March 12) – A retelling of Bluebeard! Yes, please!

Loki’s Wolves by K. Armstrong and M. Marr (May 7) – Umm…a series by Melissa Marr and Kelly Armstrong about Vikings and Norse Mythology…I don’t think I need to say any more.

Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin by Liesl Shurtliff (April 9) –  A new Middle Grade retelling of Rumpelstiltskin! His best friend is Red Riding Hood and there is a QUEST! Sign me up!

Antigoddes by Kendare Blake (September 10) – A new novel by the amazing author of Anna Dressed in Blood about Gods and Goddesses at war. Sounds good to me!

Must read sequels of 2013

Raven Flight by Juliet Marillier (July 9) – Come on guys, you know she is my all time favorite. Plus I would like some more of Flint, please!

Dark Triumph by R.L. LaFevers (April 2) – Oh man the slow burn romance of Grave Mercy was phenomenal and I love me some companion novels, anxiously awaiting this one!

The Hero’s Guide to Storming the Castle by Christopher Healy (April 30) – You all knew I ADORED The Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom, so it is no question that I will be picking up the sequel as soon as it’s released!

Dracomachia by Rachel Hartman (July 9) – I ADORED Seraphina and can hardly wait for the sequel!

Story’s End by Marissa Burt (April 2) – I really enjoyed Storybound and I am excited for the fun that is sure to follow!

raven

Older titles that must be read in 2013

Don’t judge me on these, guys, I KNOW they MUST be read. That is why I am adding them to the YOU MUST READ THESE BOOKS PILE!!

The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman – I feel like this one needs no explanation..

Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett – Gaiman and Pratchet..YES PLEASE!

A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin – I hear if you watch the show you can skip over book 1, what do you guys think?

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss – I started this one on the train to BEA and my only excuse for not finishing it already is that I am afraid because book 3 is no where near being published yet!

Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta – An award winner to boot!

notw

Less known titles to be read

The Lion of Ireland by Morgan Llywelyn (1980) – This one came up on my radar as an “If you like Juliet Marillier, you will love…” title so I decided that I NEEDED to read it ASAP and I am so lucky because the lovely Amy sent it my way for Christmas!

Wild Swans by Peg Kerr (2001) – Ahh yes, part of the Faerie Tale retellings, not sure it will surpass my love for Marillier’s retelling but we will give it a go!

Maledicte by Lane Robins (2007) – “For Maledicte is actually a woman named Miranda–a beautiful thief raised in the city’s vicious slums. And she will do anything–even promise her soul to Black-Winged Ani, the most merciless of Antyre’s exiled gods–to reclaim Janus, the lover whose passion still haunts her dreams (From GR).” How could I not read this one?

Mythago Wood by Robtert Holdstock (2003) – “or the Wood is a realm where myths gain flesh and blood, tapping primal fears and desires subdued through the millennia. A realm where love and beauty haunt your dreams — and may drive you insane (From GR).”

Dragons of Noor by Janet Lee Carey (2008) – I LOVED her other books and I LOVE dragons so this is a must read for sure!

300932

Re-reads for 2013

Sunshine by Robin McKinley – Yummy vampires. Yes, please!

The Wicked series by Gregory Maguire – To be reviewed for Project: Fairytale in February!

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor – In preparation of Days of Blood and Starlight (yep, I cheated and added two titles to my 2013TBR list!)

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin – In preparation of The Evolution of Mara Dyer (cheating again, I know)

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald – In preparation for the movie! WOO!

2012 End of Year Book Survey

This is a fun survey from Jamie over on The Perpetual Page Turner!

Best In Books 2012

*When relevant, the links will take you to my review.

1. Best Book You Read In 2012? (You can break it down by genre if you want)

EEP! Possibly the hardest question…I will make it easy on myself and just give you a Middle-Grade choice and a Young-Adult choice that were published IN 2012 (I had to make a pro/con list for this, btw):

MG: The Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom by Christopher Healy – This one made me immeasurably happy while reading it. A favorite book overall, for sure!

YA: Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson – This was a hard pick but this book made me feel ALL OF THE FEELINGS. It was just beautiful.

Honorable mentions: Scarlet by Marissa Meyer – This one was bumped from the list because it is actually being published in 2013 and Seraphina by Rachel Hartman – Another beautiful story and it has dragons!

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?

Wonder Show by Hannah Barnaby – This was a whole circus theme and it was actually one of my most anticipated reads of 2012 but unfortunately, it seriously fell short. I actually didn’t like it at all, it felt like it had no substance and I was rather bored through the whole thing. What saved the book as a DNF for me was the fact that the premise was extremely interesting, how can a circus novel be boring?!

12180226

 3. Most surprising (in a good way!) book of 2012?

Cinder by Marissa Meyer. This book was PHENOMENAL! I won’t lie to you, I hated the cover (yeah, I am judgy like that) and I was so not into the whole cyborg thing but I read it because Heidi promised I’d like it and I LOVED IT!! I was lucky enough to obtain a copy of Scarlet and OHHHH WOLFIE ❤ (not sure when, if ever, I will stop singing that to you) I loved it even more than book one!!

 4. Book you recommended to people most in 2012?

Probably Seraphina by Rachel Hartman or The Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom by Christopher Healy. Both books reminded me of how much I love reading and how fun it is. Sometimes it is important to take a step back from the things you “need” to do (like read certain titles for the blog) and just become overjoyed and enveloped in a story.

 5. Best series you discovered in 2012?

OMG so many..I suppose if I HAD to choose then I will pick The Wintercraft series by Jenna Burtenshaw. The reason that this one trumps the others is because 1. OH HAI SILAS!!! and 2. I actually went to amazonuk to purchase book 3 just so I could finish the series. This was also one of those series that I just randomly happened upon at my local library instead of finding it through reviews of fellow bloggers. Don’t get me wrong, I ADORE finding new authors through bloggers but it is even more exciting when it is a random find!

 6. Favorite new authors you discovered in 2012?

Again, there are so many! Marissa Meyer, Christopher Healy, Kelly Moore, A.C. Gaughen ,Marissa Burt, Laini Taylor..New to ME authors: Neil Gaiman (hands down), Jessica Day George, R.L. LaFevers, Jenna Burtenshaw, and Janet Lee Carey.

7. Best book that was out of your comfort zone or was a new genre for you?

You know what, I was NOT a lover of Middle Grade novels before this year…I have read some PHENOMENAL titles and now sign me up for MG any day!

 8. Most thrilling, unputdownable book in 2012?

The Hunger Games! Yes I know I took forever to read it but the first one really kept my attention. If I had to choose new titles from 2012 I would go with Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor or The Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom – I finished both books in one day (and they weren’t small!)

 9. Book You Read In 2012 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year:

Daughter of Smoke and Bone and The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer are two that  I will DEFINITELY be re-reading so that I can read both Days of Blood and Starlight and The Evolution of Mara Dyer (which I own, thanks to Brittany!)  Also I am definitely re-reading Juliet Marillier’s Sevenwaters series over again so I can read Flame of Sevenwaters with the series fresh in my mind.

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2012?

Seraphina, hands down it is one of the most beautiful covers I have ever seen.

12394100

11. Most memorable character in 2012?

Hmm this is a hard one as well…I really enjoyed Scarlet from Scarlet by A.C. Gaughen, she was a tough cookie!

 12. Most beautifully written book read in 2012?

I think I will go with Seraphina by Rachel Hartman for this one (again). I love the intricate world and character building. The characters both in the novel and in Seraphina’s head were just imaginative and wonderful. The writing itself was lyrical and flowed beautifully through my mind.

13. Book that had the greatest impact on you in 2012?

This might sound strange (Unless you are Amy or Jamie,) but I think Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson takes the cake for this one. For some reason this book just left a resounding impression on me and I found myself reading lines over and over again to allow myself to continue to feel ALL THE FEELINGS! The last few pages just killed me, I cried ugly tears for real.

 14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2012 to finally read?

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins!! The beau had to read this one first to even get me to pick it up! I am totally one of those people who doesn’t want to read a book because everyone else is reading and obsessing over it! Though I ADORED the series I think that the fact that I waited to long and heard the hype was part of the reason it didn’t leave as big of an impression on me as some others.

 15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2012?

Are ya kidding me with this question?? I guess if I have to choose I will go with:

“Watch that boy,” she said. “You’re stronger in many ways, but that doesn’t mean he can’t take you apart.” OR She was fierce, to be sure, but she had a girl’s heart, after all.” Both from Tiger Lily

16.Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2012?

Oh, Outlander. You win again! LONGEST. BOOK. EVER. The shortest books would have to be Fables by Bill Willingham.

21326

 17. Book That Had A Scene In It That Had You Reeling And Dying To Talk To Somebody About It? (a WTF moment, an epic revelation, a steamy kiss, etc. etc.) Be careful of spoilers!

The ending of The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer was mindblowing for me as was a pretty big revelation in Daughter of Smoke and Bone…I kept reading it over and over again!

18. Favorite Relationship From A Book You Read In 2012 (be it romantic, friendship, etc).

Again, are ya serious? Can I say every romantic relationship in every Juliet Marillier book that I read, as well as Fiacha and Ciaran? Ohh and Liesl and Po, Seraphina and Orma, and ::sobs:: Buttercup and Prim! Scarlet and Rob! Tiger Lily and Tink! Ismae and Duval! Cinder and Iko! Kas and Anna! I could go on and on….

19. Favorite Book You Read in 2012 From An Author You Read Previously

In a Glass Grimmly by Adam Gidwitz – that one made me SQUEEEE out loud at BEA and I almost keeled over when Heidi gave me a signed copy for my birthday!

20. Best Book You Read That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else

Definitely Cinder by Marissa Meyer (thanks, Heidi!) also The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly, from multiple Twitter recommendations, that one really got to me.

Book Blogging/Reading Life in 2012 (optional)

1. New favorite book blog you discovered in 2012?

Well…my blog is barely a year old so really you are all fantastical and I love you to the moon. However, if you are making me choose I would have to say Heidi’s blog is an obvious choice because as you all know I have a major girl crush on the chick and her reviews are always thought provoking and hilarious. I actually almost forgot to add her on here because to me it feels like we have been bff4e and I felt like she has had her blog prior to 2012 but nope! Also I can’t forget about my two girls Brittany from The Book Addict’s Guide  and  Kiki (otherwise known as Maggie) from Gone Pecan ! I feel very lucky to have found them this year, we talk daily about all things…book and life related! Honestly, many days they are what kept me sane!

2. Favorite review that you wrote in 2012?

I really enjoyed writing my review for The Hero’s Guide and Tiger Lily but one of my favorite posts to write was during our Fortnight of Fright event about villains and another post about The Book Barn.

3. Best discussion you had on your blog?

Umm yeahh I think I need more discussion posts!

4. Most thought-provoking review or discussion you read on somebody else’s blog?

I think Candice has very good discussion posts. I was also very interested in all of the posts on plagiarism that popped up a few months back..

5. Best event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, memes, etc.)?

BEA FOR THE WIN!!! It was epic and I can’t wait until next year because I am sure that it will be even more amazing!!

6. Best moment of book blogging in 2012?

When I switched over to WordPress…no, really! Also when certain authors Tweet me in response to a review I wrote about their book I just about keel over. You should have heard the squealing and seen the jumping on the bed when Christopher Healy thanked me!

7. Most Popular Post This Year On Your Blog (whether it be by comments or views)?

The Fortnight of Fright posts and the Christmas posts this month have been getting a lot of traffic!

8. Post You Wished Got A Little More Love?

How about this post on haunted places?

9. Best bookish discover (book related sites, book stores, etc.)?

I never knew about threadless.com! Or Etsy! I also found a few great bookstores in Ithaca when we went this year!

10.  Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year?

Guys…I failed ALL THE CHALLENGES!! Like…every. single. one. Part of me is like wow girl you suck and part of me feels elated because the reason I failed is because I decided that I wasn’t going to choose books based on books that I “needed” to read for reviews and so on. I felt much better after I made this decision but still part of me cringes a bit when I look at my challenges page on the blog.. >.<

Looking Ahead…

1. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2012 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2013?

The Evolution of Mara Dyer! Days of Blood and Starlight! Game of Thrones! Flame of Sevenwaters!

12656727

2. Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2013?

Hands down: Raven Flight by Juliet Marillier and The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman.

3. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging In 2013?

Number one priority is to schedule more. Scheduling is key. I slack off when I am all “Oh next week I will post that review maybe..” I also want to have more awesome bloggers and MAYBE even an author or two…EEP!! I feel like since my blog is one year old (aww) I have gotten the hang of things and now that I looovee WordPress I can make my blog as awesome as I want! (No pressure though, can’t psych myself out over here..)

Christmas Love: TV Movie Edition

Today Janice from from Janicu’s Book Blog is here to tell us all about her favorite made for TV Christmas movies! You know the ones that you obsessively cannot stop watching (just me?) but you know you should? The ones where Joey Lawrence makes a gal fall back in love with Christmas and into his arms? THOSE MOVIES. Take it away, my friend!

When I volunteered to guest post over here at Books Take You Places, I knew EXACTLY what I was going to post about: Christmas movies. And not just Christmas movies, TV Christmas movies. Every year after Thanksgiving, I clap my hands with glee and set TiVo to record the made-for-TV movies produced by Lifetime, Hallmark, and ABC Family. My husband, who is Jewish, rolls his eyes and pats my head, but this is what he gets for marrying me. I likes my cheesy holiday movies.

Much-used tropes include:

  • A workaholic who spends too much time WORKING and not APPRECIATING the love of FAMILY during the holidays. Bonus points for their children not getting to see their parents enough because of their job.
  • Some back story where someone’s past has made them cranky during the holidays, and someone else has to show them how to enjoy it again
  • A family struggling financially before Christmas but thanks to the HOLIDAY SPIRIT things are always sorted out by December 25th
  • Matchmaking Santa / Elf / Mrs. Claus
  • An office Christmas party where someone makes a fool of themselves
  • A character who believes in extreme Christmas decorations
  • A character named “Holly”, “Carol”, or “Nick”

Here’s a selection of what I’ve watched this year and my thoughts on each. This may be a long list but it is no where near as many Christmas movies I have seen. Should I be admitting to this? Eh, what’s a little indulging…
(links are to the channel pages for these movies)

It’s Christmas, Carol! (2012, Hallmark)
Carol (Emmanuelle Vaugier) is a heartless head of a publishing house who only cares about profit and not about good books. She treats everyone badly – to the point that her employees are starting to revolt. They remember the good old days, when Eve (Carrie Fisher) was still alive and heading the business. On Christmas Eve, Carol is visited by Eve’s ghost, who shows Carol her past, present, and future in order to have Carol think about the way she’s living her life.

itschristmascarol_zps6fd571da

My take: This is set in book publishing, so you’d think I’d be more enthusiastic about this one, but I’m leaning towards telling you to skip it. Carrie Fisher can do no wrong, so it’s not her fault – this was just a really cheesy remake. The character of Carol was pretty extreme, and I had trouble holding back my disbelief at several things: that she fought against the ghost right up to the point that she suddenly gave in and flipped over to being Good; that she had to use a search engine to look up the plot of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol even though she’s a BOOK PUBLISHER; and that her employees can start revolting but then do a 180 just because of one speech at the end. I wouldn’t rewatch this.

All About Christmas Eve (2012, Lifetime)
Eve (Haylie Duff) is an event planner struggling to please a demanding boss (Connie Sellecca) when she meets a cute guy at a bar named Aidan (Chris Carmack), and gives him her card. He turns out to be the CEO of a giant social network company called Gobble and hires Eve’s company for a end-of-year event. Eve has to fly to California for the job, which means missing a trip with her boyfriend Darren, but on the morning she takes her flight, two different paths emerge: one in which she misses her flight, and one in which she makes it.

allaboutchristmaseve_zpsd08a7e7b

My take: Hmm, I don’t know. This was very Sliding Doors, complete with the coming back home in time to catch her cheating boyfriend timeline. The upside of the plot being literally two stories was that this was one of the more unpredictable Christmas movies I’ve ever watched. I suspected Eve is supposed to be with Aidan in the end, but while she was in California flirting with him in one timeline, she’s unemployed and nursing a broken heart in another, and I wasn’t sure how everything would all tie together. The downside is that there are some very weird, what-just-happened moments in this movie, and I’m not sure how I felt about how things ended (although – yes, this has that required happily ever after).

Christmas on Chestnut Street (2006, Lifetime)
When an employee at the Great American Store overorders Christmas lights, his friend Lou (Robert Moloney) saves him from being fired by suggesting a Christmas light competition. Daughter of the store owner Dianne Crouch (Kristen Dalton), a rich overachiever with her life planned out, decides that Lou needs to decorate his house and win the contest (with her supervision of course). This give the two of them an excuse to get to know each other. All the while, the town goes crazy decorating their houses for a chance to hours of free shopping at the store.

christmasonchestnutstreet_zps1551fcf9

My take: Lots of nutty neighbors going overboard competing for the prize in this one. At one point there’s a fistfight over the last roll of some white covering. This couple has a very in-your-face relationship – arguing over everything, including if they are on a date and if one is falling for another.  But the impediment for their relationship (besides their class difference) becomes the contest itself. Has a little twist ending, which might not be that twisty.  There were things I liked about this relationship (the chemistry), and those I didn’t (Dianne was made out to be the flawed, not-easy-to-get-along-with character while Lou is painted as patient and perfect one she’s lucky to have found – it was unbalanced).

A Bride For Christmas (2012, Hallmark)
Unable to disappoint people, Jessie has said ‘yes’ whenever her boyfriends have popped the question, which has been during a weather forecast, on a theater marquee, and on a Jumbotron. As a result, she’s broken three engagements – the latest on her wedding day to a plumber named Mike (Sage Brocklebank). Bachelor Aiden (Andrew Walker) bets his friends he can get a woman to want to marry him by Christmas, and chooses Jessie when he meets her at a art show. Despite her turning him down for a date, he uses her interior design business as an excuse to spend time with her.

abrideforchristmas_zps27c55a57

My take: Cute. Despite the whole “bet” thing, Aiden doesn’t really come off as a jerk, which is a feat, and I liked the way they actually seemed to complement each other (both dog, card game, and horror movie lovers). I also liked that there was a good use of sappy, happy faces when this couple admits they like each other. Rather nice romcom holiday fare and a cute couple.

Once Upon A Christmas (2000, PAX Network – showing on Hallmark now)
When the balance of Naughty versus Nice tips over to “Naughty” for the first time, the daughter of Santa Claus (Kathy Ireland) leaves the North Pole in order to prove hope still exists. If she can get one family, the Morgans – single dad Bill (John Dye) and his two spoiled children off the Naughty list by Christmas, her despondent father won’t give up and retire as he threatens to.

onceuponachristmas_zpsab44d920

My take: Eh. This falls on the treacly side of the Christmas movie spectrum, where Santa Claus is real and Kristen Claus is his perfect, good daughter. Her older sister, Rudolfa (yes, really), reminds me of a cheesy Disney villainess come to life and plans to turn Christmas into a holiday were people give each other joke gifts. Kathy Ireland’s character is generally angelic and speaks in hushed, reverential voice that really grated on my nerves. The point of the story is to have Morgan siblings Kyle and Brittany learn to be less spoiled and for their father to realize he needs to spend more time with his children, but this story was just so preachy it was difficult to enjoy. (There’s a sequel, Twice Upon a Christmas that I haven’t seen).

Hitched for the Holidays (2012, Hallmark)
A couple of single people, Rob and Julie (Joseph (Joey) Lawrence and Emily Hampshire), pretend to be together to fool their families (she to stop her parents from setting her up with her ex-boyfriends, and he to fulfill his sickly grandmother’s wish to see her grandson married).

hitchedfortheholidays_zps4bef5c8e

My take: Decently cute. This had a traditional romantic comedy storyline with Christmas trappings. There’s the meddling but well-meaning families on both sides and both have issues they have to overcome in order to get together (she would rather tell “white lies” to spare people’s feelings than tell it like it is, and he runs away before his relationships get serious). The movie involves a lot of getting to know each other time in the guise of their pretending for their families. It’s a pretty typical romcom, but I did like that she’s Jewish and there is a funny storyline that involves him pretending to be Jewish too (so we have a bit of Hannukah overlapping with Christmas in this one). I liked this couple’s friendly banter.

Come Dance With Me (2012, Hallmark)
Jack (Andrew McCarthy) decides to secretly learn how to dance in order to impress his girlfriend Demi (the boss’s daughter) before Christmas, but begins get close to his dance instructor Christine (Michelle Nolden). Jack is in for some trouble in more ways that one: he’s involved in development that means demolishing buildings that the dance studio is part of, and Christine, not knowing this, turns to him for advice when she gets a notice of eviction.

comedancewithme_zps456c0c55

My take: Depends on if you can overlook the hero being something of a dishonest guy. For most of the movie Jack lies through omission about his part in the dance studio being torn down, and the longer he did this, the less comfortable I was. I was in accordance with his best friend who told him to tell the truth early on (who Jack ignores by the way). In the meantime, he isn’t the best boyfriend to the girl he’s supposedly dating – you get the impression he’s with her for because of status and not for herself. There was good chemistry between the main couple though – I think their acting holds this story together.

The Mistle-Tones (2012, ABC Family)
The Snow-Belles are an elite Christmas caroling group that performs every Christmas at the local mall. When a slot is finally open for a new member, Holly’s (Tia Mowry) bad luck robs her of getting to the audition on time, and the Snow-Belles dictatorial leader Marci (Tori Spelling) wouldn’t let her in the group anyway. Still determined, Holly starts her own group out of people from her office and convinces the mall manager to make the performance a contest for the best group to sing at Christmas.

mistle-tones_zps70e3f392

My take: A little campy, but they know it, and the singing is good. I spent a lot of the movie marveling over how much Holly’s uptight boss Nick (Jonathan Patrick Moore), looked like Mark-Paul Gosselaar’s younger brother. This has a lot of training montages and at first seemed to be about the Snow-Belles versus the Mistle-Tones, but a romance sort of sneaks in there. It’s predictable fluff. Nice karaoke bits in here.

Lucky Christmas (2011, Hallmark)
Holly (Elizabeth Berkley) is a single mom struggling to make ends meet with three jobs and a son, when her car is stolen with a winning million-dollar winning lottery ticket in it. She goes on TV to stop the thieves from being able to cash it in. Mike (Jason Gray-Stanford) is a construction worker whose dad’s company is in trouble. One night when Mike is sick, his idiot friend’s car is booted, so he “borrows” Holly’s car. Now Mike has to deal with the repercussions and try to make things right without getting in trouble himself.

luckychristmas_zpsd17b5687

My take: Is alright. On the drama side of the romantic comedies. The lottery ticket/ stolen car thing is a reason to get Mike and Holly together while also throwing a wrench into their relationship before it starts (see also practically every romcom). This is one where the side stories add substance to the main romance (Holly’s son’s need for a father figure, Mike’s problems with getting his older brother to listen to his ideas for the business). And I sort of wanted to strangle Mike’s friend for most of this movie.

Love at the Christmas Table (2012, Lifetime)
Sam (Dustin Milligan) and Kat (Danica McKellar) have spent every Christmas Eve together with their parents and their friends. From 4 to 30, we get to see these two grow up together, but somewhere in their twenties, things get complicated. In the present day, Sam is ready to ask Kat to marry him and looks back at the years.

loveatthechristmastable_zpsdc1e030c

My take: I actually really liked this one. These holiday parties look like fun. Everything takes place at Elissa Beth’s house (Lea Thompson), a friend of Kat’s father, Kat’s surrogate mother, and a Christmas junkie (something that gets explained – with a surprising link to Great Expectations). Kat and Sam pretty much indulge in a lot of shenanigans at the kid’s table every year, and when they get into their twenties, they start getting romantically attached, but never seem to actually get together. The relationship is further complicated by Sam leaving for college and job opportunities in the city while Kat stays and works at her father’s business. There was a nice amount of depth to their characters as these life choices and other things are actually discussed and part of the story. And the ending was pretty sweet – it was on the side of “this wouldn’t happen this way in real life”, but it was still nice.

If you want to catch some of these (or to see what else is showing), here are some links for you.

HALLMARK:

ABC FAMILY:

LIFETIME

And THE MEGA LIST here at the Christmas Specials wiki

Wow! How bad is it that I desperately want to go and watch all of these holiday movies? Even the ones that you said weren’t that good? Personally, I stay away from Lifetime and Hallmark but when I was a Companion my little old lady friends would watch them obsessively and once I started I couldn’t. stop. watching. Thanks so much for helping me indulge in my closet love of (somewhat cheesy) holiday movies!!

Have a Very Cherry Christmas!

Today Candice from The Grown-Up YA is here today to talk about one of her favorite holiday treats! Try to have a snack handy because your tummy will be rumbling after reading this post!

For as long as I can remember, giving my dad chocolate covered cherries has been a NECESSITY for Christmas. I would hate to see what would happen if we didn’t give him any for Christmas; I imagine it would be similar to the events described in the Book of Revelations.

My dad is also an expert at “guessing” what’s in his gifts. Which is annoying, especially when we go to great lengths to try to trick him. You know, wrapping a DVD in a giant box. We’ve event tried it with his chocolate covered cherries, but I truly believe he’s like Toucan Sam. He can smell those things a mile away and just follows his nose to them.

After Christmas, those cherries become high cotton in our house. He may offer you one on Christmas morning, ‘tis the season and all. But after that they are OFF LIMITS. Seriously. He puts them in the freezer – they last longer that way you know – and I actually think he takes inventory of those things.

Luckily, I’ve never developed a fancy towards them, so I’ve never wanted them. I don’t think any of us really like them. Thank goodness for Daddy, right?!

Several years ago I discovered how to make homemade Chocolate Covered Cherries and my dad LOOOOVVVEEEEDDD them. I try to make an effort to make him some every year for Christmas, in addition to the store bought ones. Of course, it’s even more of an effort not to eat half of them BEFORE Christmas!

ChocCherries1

Chocolate Covered Cherries

Maraschino Cherries (approx. 50-60), with stems or without

Dipping Chocolate

2 C Powdered Sugar

1/4 to 1/2 C Sweetened Condensed Milk

¼ C Margarine or Butter, softened

1 tsp vanilla or almond extract (almond adds a great flavor)

Dash of Salt

Drain and rinse cherries; freeze.

Mix powdered sugar, ¼ C sweetened condensed milk, margarine or butter, extract and salt until it makes a dense paste ball. You can add more condensed milk as needed.

ChocCherries2

Roll paste into 1” ball.

ChocCherries3

Flatten into disk and wrap around cherry until completely covered. You can roll the paste covered cherry in your hands to help shape it into a ball. Repeat for all cherries.

Melt chocolate. Dip cherries into chocolate, covering completely. If you don’t have cherries with stems, use a fork to help. Shake off excess chocolate and place onto wax paper.

 ChocCherriess4

Sometimes cherries can juice out of any cracks or weak spots in the chocolate. Use a toothpick or tine of a fork to cover with extra melted chocolate.

The cherries will “ripen” after you cover them in the fondant and chocolate, meaning the sugar in the fondant will cause the cherries to juice, creating a sweet liquid between the chocolate and the cherry, kind of like the store bought ones. The longer you let them sit, the more they “ripen.”

But good luck making them last that long!

ChocCherries5

These sound delicious, Candice! I have never been fond of chocolate covered cherries myself but my mouth was surely watering after looking at these pictures! Your dad is one lucky man!

How about you, friends? Any special holiday treats you make or receive every year?

Review: Of Poseidon by Anna Banks

of poseidonTitle: Of Poseidon

Author: Anna Banks

Publishing Information: May 22, 2012 by Feiwel & Friends

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Mermaids, Romance, Mythology

Series information: Book 1 in the Of Poseidon series

Format: Hardcover, 336 pages

Source: Borrowed from my local library

Recommended For: Those looking for a new mermaid tale with a mix of mythology

Galen is the prince of the Syrena, sent to land to find a girl he’s heard can communicate with fish. Emma is on vacation at the beach. When she runs into Galen — literally, ouch! — both teens sense a connection. But it will take several encounters, including a deadly one with a shark, for Galen to be convinced of Emma’s gifts. Now, if he can only convince Emma that she holds the key to his kingdom . . (Via Goodreads)

I’ll be honest I was wary. I was wary to begin yet another mermaid story and prepared myself to again be vastly underwhelmed and outright frustrated at the lack of depth (see what I did there) and intrigue. Thankfully, Of Poseidon was different from any other mermaid novel I have ever read. Where others fell short, Of Poseidon delivered.

I had strong feelings toward the characters of this novel. At first I really didn’t enjoy Emma, she annoyed me, and I physically cringed every time she said “ohmysweetgoodness,” but overall I really enjoyed how she grew as a character. I felt the same way about Galen as I did about Emma, annoyed. I had a hard time falling for him and really found him to be arrogant. However, once the relationship between Emma and Galen developed, I found myself falling for Galen as if we had our own mystical ties! I did not enjoy Emma and Galen’s relationship at first. Like Noah and Mara in The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer I found it really grating how Emma focused so much on her dislike for Galen and then in a moment she would be hoping to kiss him. Also? At one point he is described as having “serial killer eyes,” ummm…come again? It was descriptions like that throughout the novel that brought me to a halting stop while reading. I adored Toraf and Rayna, though I was conflicted by their relationship and can completely understand why some readers loathed how it progressed. In the end, I really enjoyed their relationship and found them to be a very sweet and honest couple. To be honest, I think I may like Toraf even more than Galen!

As many have commented on before, the changing point of view throughout the novel really bothered me. This is something that doesn’t usually affect me and I usually have no problem switching my brain back and forth between multiple points of view or picking up on who the current narrator is. This time, however, the narrators changed from first person to third person and it took me a few seconds to fall back into the story as the chapters changed.

It was the plot of Of Poseidon that I really fell in love with, the mermaid lore was exquisitely written and I was really impressed by the way Anna Banks wrote the struggle between the houses Of Poseidon and Triton. The lore surrounding these houses was so interesting that I found myself wishing for more background information about the whole culture. I was fascinated in the way Banks provided in depth details about the characters of both houses and how she made it apparent that their struggle was both on a political and personal level. Additionally, there aren’t many books that catch me by surprise nowadays and this one ended on a pretty unbelievable cliffhanger. I had that moment of wanting to throw the book against the wall because though I had an inkling, the ending was so unfathomable that it still took me by surprise. Well done, Anna Banks, thank you for providing me with a book that gave me a new hope for mermaid books everywhere. I am anxiously awaiting Of Triton, summer of 2013. EEP!

The Ghost of Christmas Past

Moving along with our Holiday love over here, we are focusing on our favorite holiday movies from our childhood! I have some of my favorites which I hope to review on the blog in the next few weeks. (Namely, those holiday classics like The Island of Misfit Toys and of course, A Muppet Christmas Carol) Brittany from The Book Addict’s Guide is here to share her favorite holiday films with us. Let’s see what some of her favorites are!

CHRISTMAS EVERYDAY

Christmas Everyday is a movie with YOUNG Erik Von Detten before he appeared in several Disney movies/TV shows and decided never to wash his hair again. This movie is sort of a Groundhog Day for a different holiday – Christmas, of course – and our protagonist EVD needs to figure out how to get his act together, be nicer to his family and his little sister and also figure out how to get the girl! He’s gotta get it all right or else he’s doomed to repeat Christmas (which doesn’t sound half bad to me) until he figures it out!

This was one of my favorite Christmas movies as a kid and every year I try to catch it on TV (when it’s actually on) and somehow each year I keep missing it.

THE SANTA CLAUSE

The Santa Clause is another Christmas classic – and this one I DO usually catch when it’s on TV. I love the idea for this movie and I usually enjoy Tim Allen’s roles (in case you didn’t remember, the Home Improvement episodes are my all-time favorite Halloween episodes…). I hated the mom’s haircut in this movie and totally didn’t get that, but I guess that’s only a minor thing, right? It distracted me as a kid. Loved Bernard’s role at the head elf – although I felt bad that Santa DIED. What!? – and I always thought that one other kid elf that kept popping up was kind of cute (I think I was young enough at the time to think that….). Anyway, love the movie and the message behind it! Lots of Christmas fun!

VARIOUS MUPPET MOVIES

My family has always loved the Muppets! No need to go into deep explanation here since (I HOPE) we all know who the Muppets are – but we used to watch Muppet Family Christmas MANY times over when my sister and I were kids (“Watch out for the icy patch!”) and for some reason our Christmas party at school when I was in elementary school (Catholic Pre-8 school) ALWAYS had a viewing of A Muppet Christmas Carol. I’m not sure why, but I’m pretty sure we watched it almost every dang year while we got sugared up with candy and cookies. These two are definitely a big part of my history!

WHITE CHRISTMAS

White Christmas isn’t specifically a kid’s movie, but it was another family favorite in my household! My mom always loved Danny Kaye and maybe a little less Bing Crosby since these were actors she grew up with in her home as well. We LOVE musicals and my mom, my sister, and I always used to watch old movies with Danny Kaye and Bing Crosby (Holiday Inn would be a good Christmas one too!) so I always get nostalgic when watching this one!

HARRY POTTER

So the Harry Potter movies aren’t Christmas movies (but apparently ABC Family doesn’t know that), but I really like the Christmas scenes that are in each one! The clip above is from HP1 and it’s one of my favorites! It still helps me get in the Christmas spirit.

ELF

I’m pretty sure I don’t have to say much about Elf! This is more of a movie for my sister and I – We try to watch one of the MANY showings that play on TV each year and I swear, I never get tired of it. I think I even saw it two, maybe three times in theaters when it first came out. Can’t wait to watch it again this year!!

MEAN GIRLS – JINGLE BELL ROCK

Mean Girls isn’t a Christmas movie either. Not by a long shot. But would it be Christmas without a skeazy rendition of Jingle Bell Rock? I guess the answer to that question is yes, but I still think this scene is ridiculously fun. Fun fact: One of my friends in high school (male friend, by the way) loved this scene in Mean Girls so much (yes, he loved Mean Girls) that he convinced our choir teacher to include Jingle Bell Rock in one of our holiday medleys. Very true story.

Britt, I also had a rather interesting winter show for choir after this movie came out. They wouldn’t let us do the moves so we added them (inappropriately) to our dance in the pep rally…Rebels, I know. I also agree with you, The Muppet Christmas Carol is like my FAVORITE and I put on every year while decorating my tree!! Also, HP totally counts.
